INTRODUCTION
Hello fellow crocheters! I’m Ristynn and I’m so excited to bring to you an adorable possum snuggler (sewing required). If you have any questions about the pattern, don’t hesitate to contact me through instagram @keepingcreatures.

NOTE:
Depending on what size you want your possum, use different yarn and hook accordingly. For example, I made the larger possum (below) using 6 ply chenille yarn, 12 mm safety eyes, and a 6 mm hook.

MATERIALS
~ 3 ply yarn in pink, white, gray, and black
~ 3mm crochet hook
~ fiber fill stuffing
~ 8mm safety eyes
~ needle for sewing

HEAD
In pink:
R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
CC to white
R2: (sc 2, inc) x 2 (8)
R3: sc in each sc (8)
R4: (sc 3, inc) x 2 (10)
R5: (sc 4, inc) x 2 (12)
R6: sc 3, inc 2, sc 2, inc 2, sc 3 (16)
R7: (sc 4, inc 2) x 2, sc 4 (20)
R8: sc 5, inc, (sc 2, inc) x 3, sc 5 (24)
R9: sc 7, inc, (sc 2, inc) x 3, sc 7 (28)

*Attach safety eyes between rows 6-7, about 6 sts apart*
R10: sc 8, dec 2, sc 4, dec 2, sc 8 (24)
CC to gray
R11: (sc 4, dec) x 4 (20)
R12: sc in each sc (20)
R13: (sc 3, dec) x 4 (16)

Stuff.

FO, close hole and weave in ends.

NOTE:
When attaching safety eyes, ensure you are placing them on the side of the head with the increases.


FACE SHAPING

STRIPE
Cut a 12″ piece of gray yarn and sew a triangle beginning at row 11 and ending at row 8 on the possum’s head.

  • KEY:
    • pull needle up
    • exit the needle

EYE COLORATION
Cut a piece of gray yarn about 8″ long. Use the colored dots on the picture for eye shadow placement.


TAIL
In pink:
R1: 4 sc in MR (4)
R2-14: sc in each sc (4) – 13 rounds
FO and weave in ends.
Do not stuff.


LEGS (MAKE FOUR)
In pink:
R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
R2: sc in each sc (6)
CC to black
R3-4: sc in each sc (6)
R5: (sc 2, inc) x 2 (8)
R6: sc in each sc (8)
Fold and sc 4 both sides together.
Do not stuff.

For the first two legs, FO and weave in ends. The last two legs should be left with a long tail for sewing (these will be the arms).


BODY
In gray:
R1: 8 sc in MR (8)
R2: 8 inc (16)
R3: sc in each sc (16)
R4: (sc 3, inc) x 4 (20)
R5: sc 7, sc 4 along the first leg, sc 4, sc 4 along the second leg, sc 1 (20)

Align the leg up to the next four unworked stitches of the body. Insert your hook through both gray and black loops when crocheting the legs to the body.

R6: sc 2, sc 2 along the tail, sc 16 (20)
R7: (sc 4, inc) x 4 (24)
R8-9: sc in each sc (24)
R10: (sc 2, dec) x 6 (18)
R11-12: sc in each sc (18)
R13: (sc, dec) x 6 (12)
R14: sc in each sc (12)
Stuff.
FO and leave a long tail for sewing (this tail will be used to sew the head to the body)


EARS (MAKE TWO)
In black:
R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
R2: ch 1, turn, (sc 2, inc) x 2 (8)
FO and leave a long tail for sewing


ASSEMBLY
Using the tail we left on the possum’s body, sew the head (from rows 7-11 – 5 rows) to the body together. Ensure you’re catching row 13 of the body when doing so.

Sew the ears onto the possum’s head between rows 10 and 11, about 8 stitches apart.

Sew the arms to the body between rows 8-11 (four rows) of the body.


AND YOU’RE FINISHED!
